BOOK: Digital Hate The Global Conjuncture of Extreme Speech

Digital Hate: The Global Conjuncture of Extreme Speech, Indiana Univeristy Press.

This is a much needed edited collecton on hate speech, especially interesting because of its global range of case studies. Online hate speech is not a new phenomenon: one might argue that it existed as long as the Internet itself. While bringing people and communities together, the Internet has always been a place of hate, verbal violence and offensive messages. What is changing, perhaps, is how the phenomena is seen and treated, legally, theoretically, and politically.

The book is interesting particularly becuase of the breadth of example, contexts and countries, where hate speech taks place. It offers an insight into which terms and frameworks are used - "trolling", "online extremism", and much more. From there, one can gain multiple insights into how the idea and the practice of "hate speech" intersects with local cultures, political regimes, constallations of racism and extremism, and other forms of digiatal political violence.

Finally, a collection like this is interesting for considering the developments and limitations of Internet governance, and other legal frameworks used to handle digital hate speech.
