REPORT: the dangers of "Big ID"

Access Now, an international NGO that supports digital rights globally, has just published a very timely report about "Big ID" programmes and the threat they pose to human rights.

The report explains what is Big ID -a digital identification system, often relying on biometric data, and governing access to services, movement, and other everyday activities.

Using the case study of India and its unique ID programme as a "modern cautionary tale", the report debunks several key myths about Big ID programmes: that they are necessary to give people legal identities; that they enable transparency; that they do not fuel surveillance state; that biometric identification is safe and reliable, and more.
